In a burial, the body of a deceased is buried in a grave in the ground. In
Germany, the use of a coffin is legally required. Said coffin is subject to
certain legal standards. Furthermore, the burial may only take place in an
approved burial ground – a cemetery.
There are also other conditions that must be met for a burial. For example,
an earthen grave must have a certain depth and a certain resting period for the
grave – depending on the soil conditions – is obligational.
A deceased person can be buried at the earliest 48 hours after death has occurred
and the burial must take place within 8 days (in Saxony) after death has
occurred.
Depending on the federal state, there are different regulations on
conducting a burial and the burial times. These can be found in the funeral
laws and regulations of the federal states.
