A death in the family or at home is an exceptional situation for many people. If a death has occurred, however, the first steps must be taken very promptly.

We have briefly summarized the necessary steps for you here:

1 - Inform the doctor

In Germany, after death has occurred, a post-mortem examination must be carried out by a licensed doctor. This postmortem examination is used to determine death, so it is advisable to contact your own family doctor. If this person cannot be reached, another doctor can also be contacted, e.g. via the telephone number: 116 117 (on-call doctor service).

2 - Notification of the funeral home

After the post-mortem examination has been carried out and the death certificates have been issued by a licensed doctor, it is necessary to notify the funeral home. As a funeral home, we are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If the death occurs in your own home, we will initiate the transfer (regardless of whether it is day or night) in consultation with you. Our trained staff will provide you with information about the required documents and the next steps on site.

3 - The consultation

After the transfer has taken place or the death has occurred in facilities such as hospitals or care facilities (which usually inform the funeral home of your choice – if specified - independently), a consultation should take place promptly. In this consultation, all matters relating to the formalities and framework of the funeral service are discussed. You are welcome to find out which documents are required for this.
